Lily: freezing in the cold

In winter, hurdling in the cold, Lily had to hang the laundry of twelve persons on the high rotary hanger. She dressed in a thin cardigan which didn’t stop the wind from chilling her bones. On her feet, she wore open toe jandals[1] totally inappropriate for the cold and wet weather. She got chilblains and her toes were swollen and giving her excruciating pain.
“It is freezing out there,” cried Lily.
The older women couldn’t care less, “What do you expect? This is New Zealand. We heard you couldn’t wait to come here,” retorted the older women sarcastically.”
